Many helpful allergy medicines are available over the counter. Antihistamines can help relieve sneezing, runny nose, and itchiness in the nose, throat, and eyes. You can buy antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl®), loratadine (Claritin®), and cetirizine (Zyrtec®) over the counter, but those that contain diphenhydramine may cause drowsiness. Often combination medications for allergies contain both an antihistamine and decongestants.
Decongestants along can help clear a stuffy nose, and are available as sprays, liquid, or pills. If you choose a decongestant nasal spray instead of a pill, don’t use it for more than three or four days in a row, as it can worsen nasal congestion. A nonprescription nasal spray with cromolyn sodium or saline can help prevent symptoms and is safe for more frequent use. Always carefully read medication labels for dosage and warnings.
Be sure to ask your Good Neighbor Pharmacist which allergy medication will work best for relieving your symptoms
